Summarizing

GIST and Beyond…

This Summarizing resource can be used in a variety of ways. It includes three different strategies for you to use with your students:
  1. GIST
  2. IPOP
  3. SHISA

Students can use these three types of organizers to summarize a text. GIST and IPOP are both used for expository text, but GIST is better for an event, such as a historical event. It is also good for a current events topic or newspaper article, because it includes the information included in a typical lead: who, what, where, when, why, and how. IPOP is good for almost any text, so tell students that if they are in doubt, use IPOP. There are also specific examples for each technique.

This resource also includes opportunities for students to practice. There are four additional expository texts and one narrative. Answer key organizers are included with sample summaries for each.

Click here and enjoy this wonderful resource.
