Main Idea Vs. Theme Task Cards

These cards are helpful for our students in understanding the difference between the main idea of a story and the theme of a story.

The cards include sixteen original stories:

Set #1 includes a prompt card encouraging students to see the difference between main idea and theme as well as sixteen half-page cards.

Set #2 includes the same sixteen stories with three options, one is the theme, one is the main idea, and one is simply an event from the story. The students use the multiple choice options to determine the main idea and theme of the passage.

You can also use these task cards and passages to simply teach theme or main idea, independent of one another using your own
strategies.
