Students can’t answer the questions if they don’t understand them!

The importance of academic vocabulary in decoding questions/prompts cannot be stressed enough. Students can’t answer the question if they don’t understand the vocabulary in the question.

Here are a some very helpful resources:

1. Click here to get an alphabetized list of the assessment vocabulary used in the ELA portion of the ISTEP. It includes the words and phrases students will frequently encounter on the test. Please make sure your students are familiar with these words and have a good working knowledge of the most important ones.

2. Click here to access an editable Google Slides template to type in the key terms and simple definitions your students need.

3. Click here to access a pre-made Google Slides presentation with the twenty-two most commonly used academic words on the ISTEP.
